Description

This Baked BBQ Chicken Drumsticks recipe features tender, flavorful chicken coated with a blend of spices and smoky BBQ sauce. Perfect for a delicious and easy main course, these drumsticks are oven-baked for a crispy, juicy result that the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Seasoning

  • 4 pounds chicken drumsticks, about 12
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Sauce

  • 2 cups sugar-free BBQ sauce, or low sugar

Instructions

  1. Season the chicken: In a mixing bowl, add the chicken drumsticks, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, ground ginger, salt, and pepper. Using clean hands, generously rub the seasoning all over the drumsticks to coat evenly.
  2. Marinate: Refrigerate the seasoned drumsticks for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat.
  3. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a roasting tin with aluminum foil for easy cleanup if desired.
  4. Arrange drumsticks: Transfer the drumsticks to the prepared roasting tin, placing them on a wire rack with a little space between each piece to ensure even cooking.
  5. Bake the chicken: Bake the drumsticks in the middle of the oven for 50 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time to brown evenly.
  6. Apply BBQ sauce: Remove the drumsticks from the oven and brush each one with a generous layer of sugar-free BBQ sauce. Return them to the oven and bake for 15 minutes.
  7. Flip and sauce again: Flip the drumsticks, brush with more BBQ sauce, and bake for an additional 15 minutes to caramelize the sauce.
  8. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve immediately while hot and flavorful.

Notes

  • Serving size is 2 drumsticks per person.
  • Oven temperatures may vary, so you may need to cook drumsticks for an additional 15-20 minutes if not fully cooked.
  • Optionally, increase the oven temperature to 400°F for a crispier skin.
  • You can substitute chicken breasts or thighs if desired.
  • Use your favorite healthy BBQ sauce to suit your taste and dietary preferences.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days; reheat in the microwave before eating.
  • For longer storage, freeze cooked drumsticks in a ziplock bag for up to 3 months.
