Description

Cheeseburger Pie is a savory, comforting dish combining crispy bacon, seasoned ground beef, melted cheddar cheese, and a fluffy biscuit batter baked into a delicious pie. Topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles, this recipe makes a perfect hearty main course that brings classic cheeseburger flavors in a convenient pie form.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Mixture

  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
  • 1/2 cup onion finely diced
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Cheese and Batter

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup baking mix such as Bisquick
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • cooking spray

Toppings

  • assorted toppings such as shredded lettuce
  • diced tomatoes
  • pickles

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9 inch deep dish pie pan or regular 10 inch pie pan with cooking spray.
  2. Cook Bacon: Place a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the bacon from the pan and place on paper towels to drain excess fat. Reserve the bacon grease in the pan, leaving about 1 teaspoon.
  3. Cook Beef and Onion: Add the ground beef and finely diced onion to the skillet with the reserved bacon grease. Cook for 6-7 minutes, breaking up the beef with a spatula until browned and fully cooked.
  4. Season Meat: Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for an additional 1 minute to blend flavors.
  5. Add Bacon: Stir in two-thirds of the cooked bacon to the beef mixture, reserving the remaining bacon for garnishing the pie.
  6. Assemble Pie: Transfer the meat and bacon mixture evenly into the prepared pie pan. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the meat.
  7. Prepare Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the baking mix, milk, and eggs until smooth. Pour the batter evenly over the meat and cheese in the pie pan.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the pie is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven. Top with the remaining bacon and your choice of fresh burger toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use 90% lean ground beef to balance flavor and reduce grease; if using higher fat meat, drain excess fat thoroughly.
  • Use a 9 inch deep dish or a 10 inch regular pie pan to hold all the batter and filling comfortably; standard 9 inch pie pans may be too small.
  • Freshly grated cheddar cheese melts better and imparts more flavor than pre-shredded cheese.
  • For crispier bacon, drain well on paper towels before adding to the meat mixture and saving some for topping.
  • If desired, add pickles, mustard, or your favorite burger sauces on the served wedges for extra flavor.
