Ingredients
Scale
Meat Mixture
- 6 slices bacon chopped
- 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
- 1/2 cup onion finely diced
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Cheese and Batter
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup baking mix such as Bisquick
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- cooking spray
Toppings
- assorted toppings such as shredded lettuce
- diced tomatoes
- pickles
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9 inch deep dish pie pan or regular 10 inch pie pan with cooking spray.
- Cook Bacon: Place a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the bacon from the pan and place on paper towels to drain excess fat. Reserve the bacon grease in the pan, leaving about 1 teaspoon.
- Cook Beef and Onion: Add the ground beef and finely diced onion to the skillet with the reserved bacon grease. Cook for 6-7 minutes, breaking up the beef with a spatula until browned and fully cooked.
- Season Meat: Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for an additional 1 minute to blend flavors.
- Add Bacon: Stir in two-thirds of the cooked bacon to the beef mixture, reserving the remaining bacon for garnishing the pie.
- Assemble Pie: Transfer the meat and bacon mixture evenly into the prepared pie pan. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the meat.
- Prepare Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the baking mix, milk, and eggs until smooth. Pour the batter evenly over the meat and cheese in the pie pan.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the pie is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven. Top with the remaining bacon and your choice of fresh burger toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use 90% lean ground beef to balance flavor and reduce grease; if using higher fat meat, drain excess fat thoroughly.
- Use a 9 inch deep dish or a 10 inch regular pie pan to hold all the batter and filling comfortably; standard 9 inch pie pans may be too small.
- Freshly grated cheddar cheese melts better and imparts more flavor than pre-shredded cheese.
- For crispier bacon, drain well on paper towels before adding to the meat mixture and saving some for topping.
- If desired, add pickles, mustard, or your favorite burger sauces on the served wedges for extra flavor.
