Description

A classic American green bean casserole made with fresh green beans, creamy mushroom soup, and topped with crispy fried onions and sharp cheddar cheese, perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces

Sauce

  • 10.5 oz. can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Toppings

  • 1 2/3 cups crispy fried onion strings, divided
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and lightly coat a 3-quart casserole dish with non-stick spray; set aside.
  2. Cook Green Beans, place the green beans in a pot of lightly salted boiling water and cook until fork tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. Mix Sauce, whisk together cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper directly in the casserole dish until smooth.
  4. Combine Ingredients, add the cooked green beans, 2/3 cups of the crispy fried onion strings, and all of the shredded cheddar cheese to the casserole dish. Stir well to coat the green beans.
  5. Bake Casserole, place the casserole in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the center is bubbly.
  6. Add Topping and Finish Baking, remove the casserole from the oven, sprinkle with the remaining fried onion strings, then return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes.
  7. Serve, remove from oven and enjoy the casserole right away while warm.

Notes

  • Using fresh green beans provides a crisp texture, but you can substitute with frozen green beans if needed; just thaw and drain first.
  • For a creamier casserole, use whole milk instead of low-fat milk.
  • Adding Worcestershire sauce enhances the umami flavor of the dish.
  • Make sure not to overcook green beans in boiling water to keep them tender but not mushy.
  • The crispy fried onions can be found in most grocery stores or made at home for extra freshness.
